FIFA Cannot Resolve Geopolitical Problems, Says Leader Gianni Infantino

FIFA chief Gianni Infantino declared that the international football governing body "is not able to solve political issues" as calls increase on football organizations to impose sanctions against Israel.

A recent UN investigative panel determined last month that Israel has carried out mass atrocities against Palestinian people in Gaza.

The involvement of Israel in soccer was omitted as a formal item on the schedule of a FIFA executive meeting held on the most recent Thursday.

Nonetheless, Infantino touched on the issue in his opening remarks for the session at FIFA's headquarters in Zurich.

The 55-year-old leader said FIFA was dedicated to "harnessing the influence of football" to "bring people together in a fragmented world".

"Our thoughts are with those who are enduring hardship in the many conflicts that exist around the world today, and the primary statement that football can communicate right now is one of peace and unity," the FIFA president said.
"FIFA is not equipped to solve international political problems, but it can and must advance football around the world by utilizing its connecting, instructive, cultural and humanitarian principles."

Israel's national team is currently participating in qualification matches for next summer's World Cup tournament, while the team Maccabi Tel Aviv are taking part in the Europa League.

The human rights organization has called on FIFA, which organizes the World Cup, and UEFA, which organizes continental events, to ban the Israeli Football Association from their tournaments.

FIFA vice-president Victor Montagliani stated on Wednesday that UEFA should take the necessary action.

"Primarily, [Israel] is a participant of UEFA, no different than I have to address a participant of my region for any given issue. They have to handle that," he said.

The Israeli team are third in their qualification pool - managed by UEFA - six points behind leaders Norway.

The top team from each group advances directly for the tournament, with the second-place teams entering the play-offs.

The 2026 tournament is being jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and the Canadian country.

The American leader Donald Trump's government has vowed to fight any attempts to block the Israeli team from participating.

The UN report said there were sufficient evidence to conclude four of the five genocidal acts defined under international law had been carried out by Israeli forces in the Gaza region since the start of the war in last year.

A panel of rights specialists at the UN later called on FIFA and UEFA to remove the Israeli squad from global competitions, stating: "Athletics must refuse the notion that it is business as usual."

Israel has consistently denied that its actions in the territory constitute genocide and says they are warranted as a means of self-defence.

Its diplomatic office called the United Nations document "distorted and false".
