On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring counsel to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for worry of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
